This is the first time I tried making Dal Makhni. It tasted really nice and looked really good as well. Making it was really simple except you need to have all the ingredients ready. This is how I made it -
After the Urad dal has soaked you need to cook it in the pressure cooker with ginger. Let it whistle about 9-10 times. After the cooker has cooled down. Transfer the ingredients into a pot and on low heat keep stirring and mashing it.
In another pan heat some ghee, add cumin and let it sizzle.
Add chopped ginger and chillies to this. Stir.
Add the chopped onion and let it turn translucent.
You can now add the tomatoes. Let it cook but keep stirring the mixture.
Now add the chilli powder and dhania powder. Stir.
Add the tomato puree.
(You can use tomato puree which is canned or You can make it.
I made the puree. Making it is really simple. You need two tomatoes and some water.
Make 2-3 slits in the tomatoes, put them in a bowl and cover them with water.
Now put it in the microwave for 7 minutes. pell it and puree it. The tomato puree is ready!)
Let the mixture cook for about 3-4 minutes.
Add the garam masala and give it one quick stir.
Now add this whole mixture into the pot where the dal is cooking.
Add salt to taste.
and now add the milk (If you want it richer add cream).
let it cook for 3-4 minutes.
add the butter and let it melt :). Stir.
garnish with coriander. (after making it I realised I had no coriander, so I chopped spring onion instead.)
Before you serve, you can top it with a little more butter if you like :)
